Certificate IV in Training and Assessment: TAE40116 to TAE40122

Version 5 of the TAE Training Package has been endorsed and will appear on training.gov.au soon (likely during the week of 5 December 2022).

TAE 5.0 contains a new version of the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122). How does TAE40122 differ from TAE40116, and how will its release affect holders of TAE40116 and/or TAE40110? Will all VET trainers and assessors need to upgrade their qualifications? How will TAE40122 fit in the forthcoming revised RTO Standards? Read on to find out.

TAE40116 vs TAE40122: Are they equivalent?

TAE40122 will be deemed equivalent to TAE40116 on training.gov.au, as the AQF level and occupational outcome of the qualification have not changed. Importantly, the qualification description will explicitly refer to TAE40122 as the ‘successor’ to TAE40116. This will ensure holders of TAE40122 meet the requirements of the Standards for RTOs 2015, and therefore minimise disruption to the VET sector and workforce.

However, most of the units of competency that make up TAE40122 are not equivalent to their TAE40116 predecessors (e.g. only one Core unit from TAE40116 has an equivalent Core unit in TAE40122). This is an important consideration for those that may look to upgrade their qualification, as there won’t be a lot of Credit Transfer available (in contrast to the TAE40110 to TAE40116 upgrade, where holders of TAE40110 were able to obtain Credit Transfer for many units within their TAE40116).

The Industry Reference Committee (IRC) has requested that the transition period be extended to two years for TAE40122.

What about holders of TAE40110?

Holders of TAE40110 (plus/including TAELLN411 and TAEASS502) will still meet the requirements of the Standards for RTOs 2015 even after TAE40122 is released. However, the Standards for RTOs are currently being revised. The most recent draft of the revised Standards states that persons delivering training and/or assessment must have “the relevant training and/or assessment credential (as described in the Guidelines)”. But as these Guidelines haven’t been released we don’t yet know what the ‘relevant training and/or assessment credential’ will be.
